Program Profile

The students of the Master Program in Chemistry recieve the knowledge and skills necessary for preparing project documentation, fulfilling production functions and typical tasks of enterprises in such industries as chemical, petrochemical, gas, pharmaceutical, microbiological, analytical, water treatment and water purification, instrument and equipment production and many others, in which membrane and sorption processes and technologies are widely used. The students gain the knowledge and skills how to seek information for their research topics and to organize the experimental research in laboratories; how to to use modern methods of integrated research activities, effectively use scientific and technical literature, as well as production, technical, and legal documentation.

In total, the curriculum offers 120 ECTS credits, including: the module of humanities, social and economic training (6 credits); the module of professional and practical training (63 credits); optional subjects (37 credits); and state accreditation (14 credits).

1. Knowledge in the Subject Area

  • Basic knowledge of general, inorganic, organic, analytical, physical, colloid chemistry and polymer chemistry.
  • Deep knowledge of membrane and sorption technologies.
  • Ability to analyze and summarize scientific and technical information and publish research results.
  • Ability to develop the methods of an experiment to obtain optimal results and evaluate the reliability of the results of an experiment.
  • Knowledge and ability to use physical and chemical methods of analysis of various objects.
  • Knowledge of the advanced up-to-date equipment used in the processes of chemical synthesis and chemical analysis.
  • Ability to analyze ways for improving membrane and sorption technologies and equipment to improve their efficiency
  • Ability to develop theoretical and technological principles of design, construction and operation of technologies and technical means of protecting water resources.

2. Cognitive Skills in the Subject Area

  • Ability to work with chemical reagents and materials.
  • Skills of planning research, problem statement for the effectiveness of research.
  • Ability to use professionally profiled knowledge and practical skills in fundamental subjects in chemical industry.
  • Ability to apply knowledge and understanding to solve qualitative and quantitative problems related to chemical analysis.

  • Ability to use innovative methods and technologies of information processing, materials preparation and laboratory results analysis.
  • Practical skills for written and oral presentations of scientific and practical material.
  • Ability to ensure daily prevention of dangerous and harmful factors of production environment during working processes and ensure operation of labor protection management systems at enterprises.

3. Practical Skills in the Subject Area

  • Practical skills of working in a chemical laboratory.
  • Ability to recompose a scientific and research equipment unit to conduct specific research or an experiment.
  • Ability to use control and measuring devices for chemical composition measurement and quality control of products.
  • Skills for operating the equipment related to physical and chemical methods of analysis.
  • Ability to use specialized software to operate measuring equipment.
  • Ability to comprehend, comment and evaluate different technological schemes of water purification and water treatment.
  • Ability to independently offer variants of technological schemes for purification of industrial effluents from various pollutants.
  • Ability to calculate the material balance of technological schemes which include membrane modules.
  • Evaluation of the efficiency of membrane and sorption technologies and equipment for various environmental processes to protect the environment.
  • Conduct research into new technological methods to protect the environment as well as develop and select the technologies and equipment that can implement the method being studied.
  • Skills of processing and evaluating research results and preparing the materials for publication.

Professional Graduates’ Profiles and Sample Positions

The spheres of work activities for a Master in Chemistry can be enterprizes of all industries and research institutions, where the issues of chemical control and analysis arise. The graduates can work in the chemical facilities of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, branch research institutes, companies of chemical and adjacent profiles, state governmental institutions, at the enterprises of chemical and allied industries, at sanitary control stations, institutions of ecological inspection and monitoring, in scientific and technical subsections of state law protection bodies, at stations of drinking water preparation and sewage treatment.

The specialist is able to perfom the following professional activities (SC #003-95):
Head of production units in manufacturing industry.
Head of a small enterprize without the administrative body in the industry.
Research staff involved in chemical and physical research.
Teacher/Instrictor of chemistry.
Other technical experts in the field of chemical science and technology.

Access to Further Education

A Master in Chemistry can continue studies at higher educational institutions and research institutes under the following specializations: "Membrane Technology", "Colloid Chemistry", "Physical Chemistry", "Chemistry of the Environment and Ecological Technologies", and others.
