Department of Literature

The Department of Literature at NaUKMA  has a strong tradition of excellence in the study of literature and literary theory across national and disciplinary boundaries. We  offer courses  (at Undergraduate, Graduate and PhD level) embracing the ancient and modern periods of world and Ukrainian literature, exploring critical, theoretical, and historical issues, as well as problems of representation in the broadest sense.

Prof. Volodymyr Morenets  

 

Professor Volodymyr Morenets  -  highly respected academic in the field of literature and linguistics. He was a key figure in rebuilding Kyiv Mohyla Academy and became its chairman of the literature department. Dr. Morenets played a leading role in promoting the mission of the university. He dedicated himself to preparing a new generation of leaders for a new Ukraine. He has been an ardent defender of university autonomy, academic freedom, integration of Ukraine within the world’s academic community and an active reformer of Ukraine’s educational system and education laws. Dr. Morenets was born in Kyiv in 1953. He studied at Shevchenko Kyiv National University and at the University of Warsaw, attained his diploma in Philology and Slavic Studies, and received his doctorate at the Institute of Literature at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in Polish Studies. He continued his academic work at the National Institute of Science of Ukraine in 1982-1996. In 1990, he was a visiting professor at the University of Ottawa. ince 1997, he became chairman of the Department of Literature at Kyiv Mohyla Academy. In 1999, he travelled to the United States as a researcher at the Harriman Institute at Columbia University on a Fulbright program. In 1999-2003 he was appointed as vice-president of Research Studies at Kyiv Mohyla Academy, later he became first vice-president of the university and director of graduate studies. Morenets has an extensive list of publications, including books such as “National Roads of the Poetic ‘Modern’: Ukraine and Poland in XX Century” (2002), “Volodymyr Susiura” (1990), Borys Olijnyk (1987). A Bibliography of his publications from 2003 to 2013 was published by Kyiv Mohyla Academy in 2013. Professor Volodymyr Morenets received the highest honor of Ukraine, the National Taras Shevchenko Award of Ukraine.

Editor-in-Chief  of  Kyiv-Mohyla Humanities Journal - first Ukrainian peer-reviewed journal in humanities which creates an international community of scholars to set up an open dialogue between historians, literary scholars, and philosophers, with an accent on Ukrainian and Central & Eastern European Studies.
