NaUKMA finished fundraising campaign for Encyclopedia

of Renown Figures of Kyiv Theological Academy

By Viacheslav Brioukhovetsky

We are pleased to invite you to the presentation of Encyclopedia on May 18, 2017 at the Old Academic Building, 3 p.m.

During the virulent tsarist policy of Russification, in 1817 the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church closed the 200-year-old Kyiv Mohyla Academy, the alma mater of such renown Ukrainian historical figures as philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda, and Hetman Ivan Mazepa, as well as world leaders such as Constantius I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople.

However, despite the pressure of imperial Russian ideology and pressure from instructors sent from Russian academies, the faculty of the former Kyiv Mohyla Academy, maintaining the Academy's long tradition of European intellectual principles, re-established the reputation of Ukraine's first institution of higher learning, which had been renamed the Kyiv Theological Academy, as the most respected institution of higher education in Central and Eastern Europe.

Working under conditions of Russian occupation and combating a Russian ideological vision of an "Orthodox Motherland" to be subsumed under Russia's tsar, the renamed Academy nevertheless evolved into an academic and spiritual center that embodied modern European and national Ukrainian values. Through its best graduates, the Academy supported the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature, promoted through a comprehension of the nation's linguistic consciousness.

Archives provide examples of outstanding theological and philosophical treatises authored by the Academy's alumni and professors of that era, that add to the heritage of Ukrainian intellectual thought and attest to the openness and understanding of an expanded cultural view of the time.

In 2001, The National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy published "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Reflected in Names: XVII-XVIII", a unique and systematized compilation of KMA alumni during the Academy's first centuries.

At the time, NaUKMA promised to prepare a sequel to this first publication, a guide to the successor of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy - the Kiev Theological Academy. This second volume, titled "Encyclopedia of Renown Figures of the Kyiv Theological Academy," will include entries of approximately 600 prominent figures of Ukrainian literature, culture, theology and science. Scheduled for release in autumn 2015, the publication is part of the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the Kyiv Mohyla Academy.

A campaign to raise the necessary funds for publication is underway. Names of all donors will be listed in this historic publication and on behalf of the university, allow me to express our sincere gratitude for the generosity of all donors who have given us support to date. In advance, I thank those who are considering this request for financial support of this second volume. Towards all we are grateful for their understanding of the need and the importance of this documentation as part of Ukraine's historical cultural heritage.

We also express our appreciation to all who are supporting Ukraine in many ways at this difficult time, in our constant struggle, and now in a war to protect our land against Russia's aggression. For this reason we propose moderate donations that will be focused specifically on offsetting the costs of publication and distribution. Donations (USD equivalent) are sought in the following categories: Major Funder-$5,000; Patron - $3,000; Sponsor - $2,000; Supporter - id="mce_marker",000; Friend - $500.

In the United States, donations should be sent to the Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America, Box 46009, Chicago, IL 60646. Please make checks payable to KMFA and note "KTA Publication" in memo line. Contact information that includes name, address, email and phone number is requested. For further information, please contact us via email at: This email address is being protected from spambots. For most of its existence, Ukraine has faced extraordinary difficulties and has had many needs. However, the 400 years of illustrious KMA alumni proves that the history of our land consistently provides us with individuals who loved and were proud of Ukraine, and contributed to the nation's cultural and intellectual heritage. We respectfully request your support in helping NaUKMA commemorate the history of such distinguished individuals.
