Qualification Requirements and Regulations


Bachelor in Philosophy has mastered a system of views of being and essence of humans and world.

Bachelor in Philosophy qualification provides thorough training in humanities: understanding of the basic laws of nature and society development and human's place in the world; awareness of the role and importance of culture in human history; a formed base of historical and philosophical education; awareness of current issues in contemporary humanities in general and philosophical thought in particular; handling skills of analysis and interpretation of texts; comprehension of the importance of human values and ethical norms; fluency in Ukrainian and foreign languages; and knowledge of modern information technologies and the ability to apply them in one’s professional activities.

Program Profile

The Bachelor program I Philosophy at the NaUKMA  was  established in 1992 and it aims at delivery a model of philosophy education that involves a combination of general humanities, natural sciences, professional and practical components, thus ensuring thorough knowledge among the students of the history of world philosophy, modern philosophical thought, classical and current philosophical sources. Appropriate language training, being implemented at the NaUKMA, enables widespread use of original works of world and national philosophical thought in the educational process.

The educational and professional program of bachelor preparation is designed for 4 years of study and requires mastery of mandatory and elective subjects of professional, practical, humanities, sciences, social, and economic profile to the total of 240 ECTS credits.

The main attention is paid to professional training that is delivered by highly qualified professors of the Department for Philosophy and Religious Studies at NaUKMA in close cooperation with H.Skovoroda Institute of Philosophy, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Faculty of Philosophy at Taras Shevchenko State National University, taking into consideration and creatively using the experience of foreign educational institutions. Not only leading Ukrainian scientists are systematically involved in teaching the program courses, but philosophers and religion experts from other countries as well.

The learning process is focused not only on the acquisition of knowledge, but also on mastery of the skills of independent critical thinking, development of analytical skills, oratorical skill, ability to communicate, carry out creative and research work. The students have the opportunity to acquire a minor specialization or master a certificate program in religion studies; enhance their education level by studying subjects in other professional areas (subjects of student free choice), to learn Latin, to improve their English and learn other foreign languages too.

Key Learning Outcomes

Bachelor in Philosophy is prepared for both continuing one’s education at a Master Program (Specialty 8.02030101 “Philosophy”) and practical activities primarily requiring analytical and humanities skills (communication; writing; translation; search for, analysis and presentation of information, etc.)

Professional Competence of Bachelor of Philosophy includes:

  • understanding of philosophy and its role in cultural history; the specific relationship of philosophy with other forms of spiritual life of humanity (religion, science, and art);
  • knowledge of the main stages of the world philosophical thoughts and essense of eminent philosophers’ opinions of Antique and the European Middle Ages, modern times, modern Western philosophy, national philosophical tradition, and Eastern religious philosophies;
  • knowledge of fundamental philosophical subjects;
  • understanding of the historicity of human existence, diversity of cultures and civilizations;
  • knowledge of the main stages of science and scientific criteria development, understanding of the role of science in the development of civilization, the nature and significance of scientific rationality;
  • knowledge of the history of major religions, ownership issues of philosophy, sociology and psychology of religion, understanding of contemporary trends in religious life, the essence of freedom of conscience, a presentation about the tradition of dissent and its shape

The study of theoretical subjects and research internship practice promotes the development of the following practical and professional skills:

  • Skills of scientific knowledge and logical thinking;
  • skills in searching for and processing sources;
  • skills of analysis and interpretation of texts in humanities (first of all, in philosophy);
  • skills of independent learning and continuous improvement of one’s professional competence;
  • research skills in the field of humanities (first of all, in philosophy);
  • ability to apply general knowledge of humanities in practical and educational activities;
  • ability to prepare analytical and reference information materials on issues in social sciences and humanities;
  • skills in practical application of modern information technologies;
  • skills of interpersonal and business communication;
  • ability to act within the ethics of professional relationship;
  • fluent communication skills in Ukrainian and foreign languages; and
  • skills of rational organization of one’s activities and efficient time management.

Professional Graduates’ Profile and Sample Positions

The educational and professional preparation of Bachelor in Philosophy forms the skills and abilities to implement executive, consultative, educational (for secondary schools), research and communicative professional duties.

Bachelor in Philosophy is prepared to carry out the following types of activities which correspond to The State Register for Economic Activities DK2009:2005:

  • activities related to data banks;
  • research and development in humanities;
  • research and development in social sciences;
  • market research and public opinion surveys;
  •  the activities in public relations sphere;
  • providing secretarial services and translation services;
  • support activities in the field of public administration;
  • secondary education;
  • school education;
  • adult education and other types of education; and
  • NGO activities.

Bachelor in Philosophy can implement the following activities and hold the following job positions that correspond to the State Register for Professions DK003-95:

  • junior specialists in education sphere (a resource specialist);
  • technical specialists in management sphere:

1. inspector in major field;
2. instructor;

  • secretaries of administrative institutions:

1. commission control inspector;
2. organizational secretary (associations, unions, federations);

  • assistants of managers:

1. Referent;
2. Main activity reviewer;
3. Administrative secretary;
4. Secretary of a Committee (at organizations, enterprises, or institutions)
5. Secretary of the Board.
Access to Further Education

Bachelor of Philosophy is prepared for further training to acquire the full higher education and Master level under the Educational specialty 8.02030101 “Philosophy” (Educational Field 0203: Humanities).

Graduation Requirements

State attestation for Bachelor of Philosophy qualification at the NaUKMA is conducted in the form of a state examination which aims at complex testing of the students’ knowledge in the subjects required in the curriculum.

State attestation of the graduates is conducted by the NaUKMA State Examination Commission. Students are allowed for the state examination providing that they complete their studies planned by the curriculum.

Based on the attestation results, a student is granted a bachelor’s qualification in Philosophy and the State diploma.
