AIM OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

 

Fundamental program for graduates of bachelor programs. It allows graduates to be trained comprehensively to start a career in a private, non-governmental, or governmental healthcare sector. The goal of the program is to train human resources capable to manage and transform the public health and health system, as well as healthcare organizations. The mission of the program is to train a young specialist at the crossroads of management, healthcare and economics, who is ready to start a successful career in one of these spheres in medical organizations, international projects, non-governmental organizations or government healthcare institutions.

The Master program is a fixed-term program lasting two years. It involves a student mastering the disciplines of five components: public health, management, economics, health care system, professionalism, as well as preparation of the master's thesis.

CHARACTERISTIC OF THE PTOGRAM

  1. 1.      

Subject area

The program structure supposes the core of compulsory knowledge that forms a trained specialist at the basic level at the intersection of the three specializations - management, economics and public health. The program provides great opportunities for deepening knowledge in the student's areas of interest (in the form of elective courses).

The main direction of the Management program of 073 specialization

The program involves high intensity of training and immersion of the student in the educational process. It requires from the student to be able to determine his or her own learning strategy, to work in conditions of uncertainty, to display the initiative in the process of his or her own education. The aim of the program is to train a graduate who is not only armed with the necessary branch knowledge, but also ready to work in turbulent conditions of transformation in the health care system.

Specifics and differences

Graduates of bachelor programs of any specialization could participate in the program, provided they have a clear motivation to work in the field of health care and have the necessary qualities for the implementation of the curriculum.

Specific features of the program are combination of Ukrainian and English language of teaching, as well as teaching by not only full-time teachers of the School of Public Health, but also external specialists working in the field.

ABILITY TO EMPLOYMENT AND FURTHER EDUCATION

  1. 1.      

Ability to employment

The main places of work of young professionals are medical institutions, international projects, non-governmental organizations or governmental institutions of the healthcare sector. In particular, the main positions and organizations are as following:

  • Middle, and, in long-term perspective, top managers in medical institutions, international organizations and projects;
  • Specialists, consultants in public health in organizations (World Health Organization, international organizations, Ministry of Health, national projects, etc.);
  • Economic experts in the organizations of the health sector (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Economy, Health Care Administrations, expert institutions, international projects, national programs, health care institutions).

Further education

Graduates of the Master Program in Health Care Management can continue their education within PHD programs in Ukraine and abroad.

TEACHING METHODS

  1. 1.      

Approaches to teaching and education

The Master program was developed with the support of the Maastricht University, where the main method of teaching is problem-based learning, which also takes place at the Master program of the School of Public Health. In addition, lectures, seminars, and student-centered teaching techniques are used (case studies, project work, role-playing games, etc.), as well as self-study and group training.

Evaluation system

Teachers of the Master program use different methods of assessment: essays, individual and group presentations, project work, - and rarely - oral and written examinations.

The examination and assessment of students' knowledge at NaUKMA is based on the rating system (100-point). The results of examinations and differentiated finals are evaluated in parallel on the national scale and ECTS scale.

  • Logically consistently explain the benefits of health care systems in the existing socio-economic and political contexts;
  • Explain health care decisions based on cost, quality and availability of health services;
  • Apply knowledge on the organization and financing of medical care comprehensively;
  • Identify existing barriers - structural, cultural, and behavioral - for implementation of the strategic goals of the health care system or organizations;
  • Develop policies for quality assurance in health services;
  • Develop and implement human resources management policies in public health;
  • Identify key stakeholders and establish a dialogue with them, reach consensus;
  • Apply basic principles of organizations in accounting, marketing, financing, and management;
  • Assess the legal, social and economic peculiarities of the business environment in health care;
  • Use basic epidemiological concepts in simple and concrete decisions concerning public health;
  • Assess the quality of data and make informed decisions based on reliable data;
  • Develop and implement projects in public health and health care;
  • Identify relevant documents and sources of information for developing a public health strategy.

  1. 1.      

The graduate demonstrates the ability:

  • To provide good knowledge of the basic principles of the health care system at an advanced level, which includes:
    • Health system goals;
    • Necessary resources, processes and outcomes and effects of the health system;
    • Quality assurance and quality improvement;
    • Organizational Governance;
    • Leadership and change management;
    • Application of SWOT-analysis;
    • Inter-sectoral interaction;
    • Program implementation;
    • To be acquainted with the newest theories, interpretations, methods and practical approaches to the organization and financing of health care and public health, including health promotion;
    • To critically approach and interpret the lattest theoretical and practical results in identifying advantages and existing barriers in health care and public health systems;
    • To develop a strategy for a particular direction of the health care system or public health and implement it through the creation of appropriate goals for the team, motivation of employees to achieve the goals in time and with the effective use of resources;
    • To solve complex tasks of organizational diagnostics of health care institution;
    • To solve complex tasks of interventions in public health and assess their success and effectiveness;
    • To have sufficient competence in independent research methods and to be able to interpret the results of research in health care and tangible sectors at an advanced level;
    • To make an own, albeit limited, conclusion about the effectiveness of health care organizations to achieve their goals effectively;
    • To demonstrate the originality and creative approach to managing an institution, project or health system.
