NaUKMA-UCU student team took part in the UN National Model in New York 2021

"In 2021 many things have happened for the first time for the UN National Model (NMUN),the world's largest and oldest ongoing university-level Model UN, which initially had to take place in New York on 28-31 March 2021. For the very first time this world conference was conducted online, for the first time the Ukrainian team of three students from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Yevanhelina Tkalenko, Kristina Hai and Mariia Panchenko) and three students from the Ukrainian Catholic University, Lviv participated at NMUN-NY", says Dr. Galyna Solovei, faculty member of the NaUKMA Department of International Relations and Faculty Advisor of the newly created NMUN Club KMA.

During the NMUN-HY 2021 university teams from more than 130 countries imitated sessions of 23 committees of the United Nations. Joint Ukrainian team represented small Asian country Brunei Darussalam and, even though this was the very first experience of the Ukrainian team to perform on such a high level, along the much more experienced teams from the world-known universities, our team won the Distinguished Delegation award for their brilliant participation in the model. In all five committees Brunei representatives worked, Brunei became sponsor (author) of the UN draft resolution.

Despite this year online format of NMUN-NY 2021, organizers did their best to immerse the model participants into the UN headquarters. Before the start of the model, all the participants were invited for the wonderful virtual tour over the Chambers where the Security Council and the General Assembly are held. Simulation itself took place on the highly interactive Gatherly platform, which features multiple communicative tools, such as roll call, voting etc.

Joint Ukrainian team's participation in the NMUN-NY became possible thanks the initiative and support of the NaUKMA old partner, MacEwan University (Canada), in particular Larysa Hayduk, Director of the Ukrainian Research and Development Centre at MacEwan University, Dr. Chaldeans Mensah, professor of the Department of Political Science at MacEwan University, MacEwan University Model UN Club.

Many universities around the world incorporate preparation for the Model UN into the regular curricula of their students in international relations, political science etc. University courses, where students learn about the major international organizations, can have preparation for this simulation as integral part of the syllabus, while the actual model UN simulation is arranged as a final exam. NaUKMA undergraduate students in International Relations will have such an opportunity in the next academic year! The NaUKMA course “UN in the Global Governance” (BP International Relations) will includes COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) component of 7 joint sessions with the faculty and students from McEwan University, Canada and UCU, Lviv, Ukraine. The course will finish with UN Model simulation as a final exam. This COIL initiative will be the natural development of the MacEwan-NaUKMA-UCU cooperation around Model UN, while the NaUKMA students will prepared for the Model UN both in class and through the activities of the NMUN Student Club KMA, so far greatly supported by the MacEwan University Model UN Club.

NMUN New York has brought me a lot of new friends from different corners of the world. Moreover, I have understood all the details of the procedure and UN documents. I had a wonderful time during all 4 days, I have developed my negotiation skills and become more stress resistant. Also, the proclamation of speech was a good practice in public speaking.

I am grateful for such an opportunity!

It was my first UN Model, and it is very unexpected that I had such a great opportunity to represent the whole Ukraine on the world Model. In my opinion, everyone who wants to overcome the fears of public speaking, pump up negotiating skills and become a worthy representative not even of Ukraine, but of any company must go through the "school" of UN Models. It's hard, but it's worth it.

Kristina Hai, NaUKMA IR BP-3, NY•NMUN NPT Committee

NMUN New York was an incredible experience of networking, discussions, and brainstorming, as the topics of peace and international security are meaningful for my academic development. Being a delegate of Brunei Darussalam allowed me to acquire vast knowledge of global issues concerning the usage of weapons. I am grateful for this chance of development in international relations and hope to help more Ukrainians to get acquainted with the NMUN opportunities.
