From Warfare to Lawfare: International Law in Practice

At a time when the relevance of international law is increasingly questioned, our Faculty of Law engages with it as a field that continues to operate and evolve in real time: shaped by wars, and applied in peace.

From Warfare to Lawfare: Legal Responses to Atrocity Crimes and Other Violations of International Law has been developed as a programme that brings together academic analysis and practical engagement with international law in conditions of armed conflict and beyond.

Over the course of its previous editions, the programme has evolved in response to both scholarly debate and ongoing developments in international practice. It now offers a broader range of courses and greater flexibility, allowing participants to build a focused specialisation aligned with contemporary challenges in international law.

The programme is delivered online and taught entirely in English.

Participants may enrol in individual courses or combine three courses to earn a certificate, including the option of obtaining ECTS credits. The proposed courses are the following: Advanced International Criminal Law, Current Issues of International Humanitarian Law, Genocide Studies, Lawfare and Misuse of International Law, Transitional Justice, The Life and the Death of States.

The teaching is grounded in the experience of scholars and practitioners working with international law as it develops in real time, including in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine. At the same time, the programme situates this experience within a wider comparative perspective, enabling engagement with different forms of armed conflict and with the international legal order as a whole.

Participants from Europe and the America have already joined Kyiv-Mohyla students and contributed to shaping shared intellectual environment, in which diverse perspectives and experiences inform the study of international law.
