In October 2025, NaUKMA Department of Environmental Studies started the realization of the Scientific Research Work (SRW) “Development of Biodiversity Monitoring Programme in Ukraine” under the project “IKI Interface: Supporting Ukraine towards Ambitious and Integrated Climate Policy (Green Ukraine)”, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Government, within the framework of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). Its goal is to develop an effective biodiversity monitoring program by selecting, analyzing, and approving appropriate unified, harmonized methodologies and parameters for the relevant taxonomic groups of animals and plants, harmonized for use throughout Ukraine, considering approaches to similar work used in the EU. SRW is also aimed at implementing the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated January 17, 2025 No. 45 "On Approval of the Procedure for Monitoring Biological and Landscape Diversity."
The main stages of the Scientific Research Work envision:
- Analysis of the status of biodiversity monitoring in Ukraine and determination of the monitoring and conservation priority objectives; analysis of methods for obtaining, analyzing, preserving and disseminating information on the state of biological and landscape diversity; selection and processing of information obtained during monitoring.
- Identification of the main monitoring entities and implementers responsible for the biodiversity monitoring; elaboration of reporting requirements for biodiversity and landscape monitoring.
- Preparation of a draft Biodiversity Monitoring Program in Ukraine as a state policymaking document; dissemination and discussion of the project results.
At the SRW’s final stage, a discussion of the elaborated draft of the Biodiversity Monitoring Program will be held to collect and consider remarks, suggestions and comments from the governmental bodies involved in biodiversity monitoring, scientific institutions, nature conservation NGOs, administrations of protected areas, and other experts in this field.
In this way, NaUKMA will not only take an active part in the development of the Biodiversity Monitoring Program in Ukraine, but will also contribute to the joint efforts in the development of innovative, cross-sectoral solutions and the improvement of state policy in the field of climate- and biodiversity in Ukraine.
