About Department

Department of Archaeology at the NaUKMA was founded in 2013 based on Master Program “History. Archaeology and ancient history of Ukraine”, which was the first archaeological program in Ukrainian education since 2000.

 

Department teaches Master students of speciality 032 “History and Archaeology” in “Humanitarian sciences” - 0203.

 

The main focus of the Department is the training of specialists in archeology and ancient history in accordance with the high standards of contemporary European science. As a result of the close cooperation of NaUKMA with the Institute of Archeology of the NAS of Ukraine, whose powerful scientific potential has enabled the involvement of an unprecedented number of highly skilled specialists. The direct combination of academic science with modern higher education guarantees a high level of knowledge of future specialists in archeology and ancient history of Europe. The oldest past of Ukraine is considered on a wide background of the ancient history of the Eurasia.

 

Participation in archaeological expeditions, including international ones, is a part of educational process. Future specialists will have a wide range of specializations that will allow them to work in different institutions: from research institutes and universities to diplomatic missions in Ukraine and beyond. The Master's degree allows to continue archaeological education in postgraduate studies, - to obtain a PhD degree in “Archaeology” in Ukraine or in any other doctoral programs at universities in Europe and America. The vast majority of the graduates of the Department continue their studies at the NaUKMA postgraduate school and the Institute of Archeology of the NASU, or they start professional career at the NASU. Every tenth archaeologist in modern Ukraine is a alumnus of the Department of Archaeology at the NaUKMA.
